The Soferet and the Scroll of Esther

Traditionally men have been the scribes for ancient Jewish texts. Very few women entered that realm and when they did enter it barriers were put in their way. Within the last ten years it has been recognized that woamn are indeed welcome to scribe certain texts.

Laya Crust has scribed the entire scroll of Esther and illustrated it with 32 detailed paintings on kosher animal parchment. The paintings are based on 15th Century Persian manuscript art and the lettering was done using the ancient script of the sofer.

The process is intriguing. This presentation investigates the time line of Persian history, the rules for scribing a megillah, and various historical renderings of megillahs.  Laya will also share  her perspective on the creation of this incredible scroll,  and stories behind the exquisite paintings.
