Portrait of the Haggadah

The seder evening revolves around the haggadah. The first known illustrated haggadah was made in 1290, and since then new haggadot appear on the book shelves every single year . The haggadh tells the story of the exodus from Egypt and also stories about the place where the haggadah was created. We can see how people dressed, their furnishings, and what was going on culturally or politically where each haggadah was produced. We will trace themes and styles of this unique art from the earliest haggadot to current popular styles.
